Surf Mats

Postby Keala'ola » Sun Dec 06, 2009 11:45 pm

Anyone interested in mat surfing? As in George Greenough, inflatable air mattress wave riding? I'm in Australia right now where a quality mat can be had for cheap, under $50 USD. If you're interested in one, feel free to PM me and I'll gauge interest and pick up a few before I return to cold water regions.

BTW, I'm envious to have missed the recent clean swell and light offshores in Oregon. Despite the fact my wetsuit is 7500 miles away, I'm looking at heavy onshore winds and Oregon like 2ft @ 6 seconds wind chop for the last week here in New South Wales.

Happy Christmas time from Oz...

Sure that looks fun but why wouldn't you just buy a body board.
You can get one for a lot cheaper and they will put in way more critical places with more control.

If your going to be on your belly and all.

I would say that I have ridden mats...
Sponges when I was a kid...
And Paipo boards...
All different and different experiences...
Mats are fastest for sure...
Paipos are awesome cause you can sikn 'em super deep...
Boogie boards have few redeeming qualities...
Beyond screwing around in shorepound...
But then that's just like my opinion man.

If there aint 4 fins I'm not in. But there is a guy who rides one exclusively in Westport. Shark biscuits is what we used to call them.

It's true..one of the few things reasonably priced in Oz are surf mats. $30-50 for good quality HD cotton/ latex backed. There is a $99 one that looks like the Solomonson material - beefy. I picked up three mats total, one for NM.

BTW, my buddy got here a week before me and guess who he runs into at Watego's beach in Byron, with mat and flippers? Yeppers..it was George Greenough. During a bike ride, I'm pretty sure we spotted his A-frame house up in the hills off a dirt road between Broken Head and Lennox Beach.

The wind has been raging here but the setups I've seen are droolworthy - I also checked out Yamba & Angourie. No wonder Oz produces so many world class surfers. I'm coming back again when the southerlies are on.

Mats

Postby McDing » Thu Dec 10, 2009 7:08 pm

Those are the old style rubberized fabric mats that we used to rent on the beach or buy at Thrifty Drug(for about $8.95) from SC to SD in the 60's

The kind with the ropes running thru grommets?
That would wrap around your neck and strange you?
Ahhhh, memories.
