Words from Jason Gardner, one of the contest organizers...
"We definitely didn’t have to play pool this year. We were treated to 6-8 foot perfection. Thank you to everyone, surfers, spectators, volunteers. All of us that witnessed this event know it was a special weekend. This contest is going to bring out some serious competition in the years to come.
How did we pull that one off? Perfect surf, weather, good vibe, Mostly stoked competitors. Well, at least the ones that understood the format. If you didn’t understand the format you should have been at the 7:30 AM Meeting that nobody showed up for….Surfers.
The bottom line was you had to get all 4 surfers on the team to score at least one decent score per heat. You may be the biggest ripper in the whole contest but you’re only worth 10 points out of a possible 40 per heat. After you get a good one you’re better off rooting your teammates into a few. If you’re sitting on a solid six point wave you’re probably not going to improve on that much. It’s better to make sure your buddy who may only have a 3 improve his score.
The judges where rock solid consistent. I was very impressed. Scores were low on average, but that leaves room for better rides. Thank you to Jedi Johnny, Stan Michelson, Hannah Nichols, and Sean Johnson.
It was interesting to hear the communication going on between the teams out in the water. Especially Gorge Performance, they had it down like a military operation. You don’t hear a surfer telling another surfer to go on a wave in the middle of a contest very often.
The Sean and Rich Show was as entertaining as the contest, announcers of the year for sure.
One of the coolest things I saw this weekend was Buzzy Morales and Tony Perez working together on the same team. Who would have thought that a guy who prays before every surf and a guy who spray paints his boards black and draws demon heads on them would come together for the common good of the team. Yeah, we broke down barriers this weekend. I felt the love.
I’d call the crowds at both the contest and the party “intimate”, for lack of a better word. Right Front Burner put on a great show for us fortunate few. I don’t think it will be a problem next year. The buzz around this contest is growing now that everyone understands what it is and what it’s about. It’s the anticontest."
