2008 CSO Open, June 28-29

Press release from CSO:

This years contest was held at Roads End State park at the North end of Lincoln City.

We had over 70 competitors from all over the Northwest, and even Hawaii. We had a great turnout, lots of spectators, and families had a great time! The original weather forecasts were saying 30 mph winds. Well I guess God had other plans! We had ideal surfing conditions on Saturday, high temps, and little wind. The waves were a bit inconsistent, but everyone made the best of it, even with a really strong south current.
Sunday, we did get some wind, and a thermal layer came in and hampered visibility for the last heats of the day, but we made it through.
 
The Menehune's division was a blast. Little Izzy Martinez-Ybro, a female surfer, won her division by being very aggressive, catching as many waves as she could(with her dad Vinnie helping), and pulled off a HEADSTAND to win! 
 
Local surfer Jeremy Ramussen won Short Board open. Jeremy was contest director last year and did not get to compete, so it was nice to have him back in the water. Kirk Tice gave him a run for his money! They had a one-on-one shoot out for the last heat of the day.

And a local surfer who bought a raffle ticket for just ONE DOLLAR won himself a new Russo surfboard. We decided to give a new Webber short board to the last place groms, Travis Cockcroft. We wanted to focus on the fact that "the last are first".

Gary Smither of North Bend (head judge) and cancer survivor did an incredible job of over seeing the Pacific Northwest Judges. Scoring seemed to be fair and consistent.

We are donating the contest profits to Gary so he may pay off some remaining medical debts.
